Robert C. Bates Sr., 78, of Glassboro went home to be with the Lord on May 17, 2012 at the JFK Hospital, Washington, Twp., NJ. Born in Albernarle Co., Va. to the late William Henry and Mattie Belle (Grady) Bates he was an educator for the Edgewood Board of Education, where he retired from in 2000.
Robert was previously employed as an Ocean City police officer (1961-1963), he enjoyed woodworking, and was very politically minded at all levels municipal, county, state and federal, he was a very strong and proud Democrat, that believed everyone should vote and be involved in the process. Robert was also a very proud member of the US Marine Corp. 1952-1955.
Robert leaves to cherish his memories a loving and devoted wife of 49 years Jenny (Grant) Bates, 2 sons Robert C. Bates Jr. and Rodney E. Bates, 2 sisters Margaret Chatman and Rozena Bates, 1 grandchild Milian Milice, 1 god child Rian Talley, and a host of “sons” he was very instrumental in raising, cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Services will be held Friday, May 25, 2012 at the Emmanuel Baptist Church, Glassboro, NJ at 11:00 am where friends may view 2 hours prior to services. At the request of the family there will be no final viewing. Interment will be held at the Gloucester Co. Veterans Cemetery, immediately following service.
