Bethura Agatha Alexander, affectionately known as Miss Betty, 89, of Bridgeton NJ passed away peacefully at her home on April 3, 2025. Born on August 12, 1935 to Cecil and Violet Alexander in Hopewell, Hanover Jamaica. She was one of 12 children.
During her time in Jamaica, she was a very active community member taking part in various community events such as concerts, fairs, teaching art and crafts and supporting the local cricket team. Her community activism earned her an award from the Social Development Commission of Jamaica for outstanding contributions in the field of Community Development.
Miss Betty was an excellent cook, her cooking talent earned her multiple medals and certificates of distinction for her entries of original recipes in the Jamaica Culinary Arts festival. She was always willing to share her home and her cooking with anyone that was in need.
Her kind caring attitude migrated with her to America in 1982 where she settled in New Jersey. She worked at the Vineland Kosher Poultry plant while cooking on the weekends at the C and B Deli Restaurant on Rt 49. She helped people to fall in love with Jamaican food and they would flock to the restaurant. She created a market for Jamaican food in the area. To this day some people would ask "is Miss Betty still cooking?". She loved her sports and kept up on any games going on, especially her beloved Eagles.
Her welcoming, kind and jovial demeanor won the hearts of everyone she comes in contact with. Her kindness knew no bounds. She had a special way of connecting with young people and they enjoyed being around her.
She left to cherish her memories her 8 children, Shirley, Annette, Avia, Byron, Maxine, Prince, Jean(Desmond), Tyrone and special nephew Ronald. 31 grandchildren (Patricia Wright eldest grandchild), 44 great grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren, 3 sisters Reita, Doreen and Beryl Alexander, a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Vernon Oliver Samuels, parents Cecil and Violet Alexander, 6 brothers Harry, Alfy, Edwin, Selvin Simeon and George Alexander, 2 sisters Gwendolyn and Myrtle Alexander. Miss Betty's legacy will forever live through the generations she left behind.
