Betty Virginia Woodford

From her birth on September 16, 1934, in Salem, New Jersey, to her peaceful departure on July 30, 2026, living in Deptford, NJ, Betty Virginia Woodford lived out a beautiful truth: that one person can truly make a difference in the world around them.

Though Betty was born an only child, she was never lonely. She was quiet and loving and absolutely loved being surrounded by her beautiful extended family; her grandmother, mother, aunts, uncles and seven wonderful cousins Randy, Oakie, Doris, Bernice, Lewis, Harold and Blanche whom she fiercely loved and fondly labeled her “sister-cuz” and brother-cuz”.

In 1959, Betty married her true love, Thomas “Tom” Woodford. Together, they built a beautiful 53-year marriage rooted in enduring love, respect, laughter, and shared purpose. From Salem, to Woodbury, to Deptford they grew their family, bringing three lovely daughters into the world: De’An, Monique, and her late, beloved daughter Nicole. Her three girls were her ultimate pride and joy. She treasured being a wife and mother; raising their children with foundational Christian values.

Betty’s life was anchored by an unwavering, deep-rooted faith. As a child, she and her family attended Mount Hope Baptist Church in Salem, NJ every Sunday where she often expressed her love for the Lord by singing in the Choir. She had fond memories of singing her first solo; “Just A Closer Walk With Thee” which became her favorite hymn.

A woman of deep faith, Betty was a devoted member of Bethel AME Church Woodbury, NJ for over 63 years. She always valued her friendship and fellowship with Sis. Marie Capers, who introduced her to the Bethel Church family. Whether a member of the Trustee Board, Cathedral Choir, creating/organizing the Thanksgiving Feast, Everybody’s Birthday Fundraiser, Bethel Community Garden, designing the Bulletin Boards or fine tuning the Church Library, Betty was a true woman of God who served with a quiet and gentle spirit.

Betty is reunited with her beloved husband Tom, daughter Nicole, loving mother (Rebecca Henson), second mother/aunt (Henrietta), her beloved grandmother (Blanche) and five brother/sister cousins. She leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories for her daughters De’An and Monique, her “sister-cuz” Bernice, sister-in-law Mary Delmast, sister-in-law Faye Alexander, brother-in-law Floyd Alexander, many nieces, nephews, godchildren, extended family, neighbors and countless friends.

Betty taught us how to live with grace and love. She taught us to love the Lord, to fightfor what is right, to heal where it hurts, to teach the youth, and to love one another without limits. As we say goodbye to her beautiful spirit, let us carry her torch forward. Let us march a little prouder, read a little deeper, and love each other a little better, just like Betty did.

Mom, we thank God for your fear of the Lord, your life in Christ, and your legacy for your family, church, neighborhood and community. We love you. We will miss you and will carry your wisdom and loving memory in our hearts forever.
