Doris West's Obituary

Doris Adelia Shorter-West was the oldest of six children born to the late Wilbert J.Shorter and Lavina (nee Johnson) Shorter on February 15, 1923 in Yorktown, N.J. (now Pilesgrove).

She departed this life on Thursday, September 14, 2023 at the Inspira Hospital in Vineland, N.J.at the age of 100.

She is a graduate of Woodstown High School Class of 1941.
Doris joined Mount Laurel A.M.E. Church at a young age under the pastorate of her late uncle, Rev. Abraham B. Elsey where she served as a member of Steward Board No. 2, Sunday School Superintendent, a teacher and a choir member.

She was united in Holy Matrimony on December 15, 1962 to the late Rev. James W. West, Sr.  They shared many cherished moments together serving the Lord before his passing on January 30, 1987.

After the passing of her husband, she returned to Mount Laurel, her home church where she continued to work diligently for the Lord.  She served as Vice Chairperson of the Board of Stewards, President of the Sarah Jane Cottingham Women's Missionary Society, Sunday School teacher, Class Leader, a member of the Finance Committee, and an active member of Bible Study.  She was a member of the New Jersey Conference Board, Women's Missionary Society, and former Treasurer for the Gouldtown Area Missionary Society.

Her community affiliations were Sunshine Chairperson Woodstown Chapter #4735, Young at Heart Club of Salem, N.J. and a volunteer at the Memorial Hospital of Salem graciously greeting visitors with a contagious smile. Doris was a member of Suburban Auxiliary #12 Ranch Hope for Boys and Girls in Alloway, N.J. In her spare time, she loved to read her bible, do crossword puzzles, talk on the phone and watch Jeopardy. She also loved a good home cooked meal.

In her honor, Mayor Don Diettrich of Woodstown, N.J. presented a proclamation at her 100th Birthday Celebration held at Creekside Golf Course in Woodstown N.J. on February 11, 2023, declaring that February 15, 2023 be known in the Borough of Woodstown as "Mrs. Doris S. West Day".
