Dorothy
Burt
December 19, 1935 – January 14, 2022
On January 14, 2022, Dorothy earned her wings and peacefully transitioned to be with the Lord and reunited with her beloved husband, Burt, with family by her side.
Dorothy, who was affectionately known as Mama Dot, Dot, and Dottie, was born on December 19, 1935. She was the daughter of the late Andrew McFarland and Drucilla Aldrich-McFarland. She was the eighth child of eleven children to be born.
In the fall of 1944, Dot moved from McBee, South Carolina to Mizpah, New Jersey where she attended the Pleasantville School System.
In 1955, Dot married the love of her life, William Burt Sr., in which they shared 60 years of marriage together. Their wonderful unification was blessed with three children, Lisa, Billy, and Darnell.
Dot was very active in the community and a faithful member of St. John A.M.E. Zion Church in Mizpah where she served as a Stewardess, Deaconess, and a Class Leader. She was also a chairperson for Women's Day.
She was also a member of the Eastern Stars Rosebud Chapter No. 47, which has since merged with Atlantic Chapter No. 3, for a total of 48 years, which was a passion of hers. Dot always took pride in remembering and reciting her lines.
In her earlier years, Dot worked for the Mizpah Coat Factory. Before retiring, she was in the banking industry for over 30 years working as a bank manager for several of those years. She was excellent at her job and loved by many of her employees and customers. She was recognized for her hard work and commitment by receiving several awards. In 2019, Dot was honored by the Concerned Citizens of Mizpah organization.
Dot enjoyed working in the yard, skating, playing horseshoes, ping-pong, and especially helping others. She also loved playing baseball and basketball with her brother and was considered the "tomboy" of the family. Her favorite pastimes were cooking, baking and dancing which she would do whenever she heard music. She was well known for her baked mac & cheese, which was loved by many, as well as her Pina Coladas and Brandy Alexanders. Dorothy was a tremendous support to her children and grandchildren and extremely generous to those whom she loved. Even though her illness slowed her down, she continued to have that beautiful smile.
Dot leaves to cherish her memory: her daughter, Lisa; two sons, Billy and Darnell; five grandchildren, Tiffeny (Damont), Chuk, Brandon-Tyler, Madisen, Shania; three great-grandchildren, Damont, Timone', Timiyah; two god-daughters: Alana Howard, April Newman; two bonus sons: Andrell Johnson, Cornell Davis; four sisters, Lela Dow, Camden, S.C., Willa McFarland, Mays Landing, N.J., Jean Kearney (Wesley), Williamsburg, V.A., Lois Johnson (Robert), Mizpah, N.J.; one brother, Andrew McFarland Jr., McBee, S.C.
Dot was predeceased by her parents, Andrew Sr. and Drucilla McFarland; her husband, William Burt Sr.; five sisters, Louise Dais, Joann Pritchett, Edith Colburn, Hattie Little, and Thelma Johnson.
She also leaves to mourn her passing, but cherish her memory, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
