Edward
Newman
June 3, 1932 – January 11, 2024
Edward Newman, a beloved and cherished member of the community, passed away on
January 11, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a profound impact on
the lives he touched. Born June 3, 1932 in McBee, South Carolina, to Edward Exodus
Newman and Carnell (McFarland) Newman, Edward's journey was one marked by resilience, community service, and a deep commitment to family.
At the age of 11, Edward moved from McBee to Mizpah, NJ, where he quickly became
an excellent student. He attended Mizpah and Mays Landing grade schools, and
graduated from Egg Harbor High School in the class of 1950. Throughout the years, he
remained close to his high school classmates, regularly attending reunions that fostered
lifelong friendships.
He loved all sports, but baseball was his passion. At 15 years old he pitched a no hitter.
When he gave up playing, he could be found managing the Mizpah baseball team and
serving as umpire for area league games.
Edward was not just a resident; he was a neighborhood socialite. Known as "Uncle Ed"
to his nieces, nephews, and their friends, "Dad" to his daughter and friends, infamously
"PopPop" to all of his grandson's friends, as well as everybody's first barber, BBQ
enthusiast who created his own delicious sauce, and talented bartender; he created
spaces for joy and camaraderie. Whether engaging in friendly card games, bowling
leagues, or simply sharing a laugh, Edward's presence lit up the room.
A dedicated family man, Edward was predeceased by his wife Ada L. (Whaley-Bey)
Newman and siblings Coel McFarland, Sarah E. Kirkwood, Julian Newman, Alvin J.
Newman, and later life companion Alberta J. Davis. He is survived by his daughter
Kendra Newman-Nelson (Michael), his beloved grandson Darren A. Moses Jr., bonus
granddaughter Deona Anderson, and her children Christopher and A'zariya, brothers
Charles A. Newman (Arlene), Tyrone Newman Sr. (Sandra), and Joseph McFarland
along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Edward's commitment to community service was unparalleled. He was a founding
member of the Mizpah Inland Human Services Board, ensuring the community's needs
were met. His lifelong involvement in the NAACP, Urban League, and the Mizpah
community showcased his commitment to social justice and equality.
As a member of St. John A.M.E. Zion Church for over 70 years, he wore many hats,
serving as a Sunday School teacher & superintendent, choir member, trustee, sexton,
and Men's Day chair, just to name a few.
For over 25 years, he held the office of president of the JMc Family Palmetto Society.
Holding the importance of sharing the history of the Johnson, McQueen, McFarland
family to continue the dreams of his maternal grandmother that her family remain a
supportive unit of love for one another through the generations
Honorably discharged, the proud US Army veteran, contributed to various spheres of
the workforce from insurance salesman to becoming the first black clothing cutter in
Hammonton, NJ, and ended his career at Castleford Tailors.
Edward's final days were spent at the NJ Veterans Memorial Home in Vineland, NJ,
where he continued to bring joy with his quick wit, love for people, and his favorite song,
"It's Your Thing." He will be deeply missed by his Main Man AKA his grandson Darren,
newly adopted granddaughter Jocelyn, son-in-law Mike, and daughter Kendra, with
whom he shared countless cherished moments, especially during holidays.
Edward Newman's life was a testament to the power of love, service, and laughter. As
we bid farewell to a remarkable soul, let us remember him for the joy he brought into our
lives and the lasting impact he made on the community he held dear. May he rest in
eternal peace.
