Garlvis Curnell Johnson, 33rd Degree Mason, son of the late George Dewey Johnson and Mary McFarland Johnson, was born in McBee, SC. on January 12, 1938. He was one of ten children. His family moved to Mizpah, NJ in October, 1941. He attended Pleasantville High School where he played on the basketball team.
At the age of 17 he became a member of the National Guard where he served for 5 years. After high school, Garlvis worked as a mechanic at Pep Boys then began his long career in the labor and construction field. Among his many job sites, he worked and retired from the Salem Nuclear Power Plant.
As an avid race car driver, he had excellent mechanical skills which he used to “soup-up” his own racing cars. He often raced at the Atco and Pleasantville Speedways where he won many trophies.
Garlvis was a hard-working man. Sincere, fun to be around and highly skilled and knowledgeable about building and construction.
Garlvis is a valued member of the Mizpah Community, and member of St. John AME Zion Church.
He was often seen volunteering his time, talent and comical personality at Community events held by the Doric Lodge and Alfred Lundy Community Center including: hosting the Boys Scouts, working the annual Bike Give-A-Way and Christmas Dinner, attending regular Lodge meetings, fundraising dinners and events. He was also known to lend a hand when someone in the community needed help with a home construction or maintenance project.
Garlvis is a Member and Past Master of the Doric Lodge No. 25, F.&A.M. (Prince Hall Affiliation) of Mizpah. Garlvis is a 33rd Degree Mason. A very high honor held by very few men.
Garlvis is survived by his Daughter: Michelle “Shelley” (Bruce, Sr.) Davenport, Grandchildren: Shakenah Davenport, Bruce E. Davenport II, Alexia Hardy, Stepsons: James “Butch” Robinson, Antonio “Tony” (Iris) Robinson, Stepdaughter: Valerie (Joseph) Robinson Thomas, Stepgrands: Quadirah Torres, Trey Daugherty, Tiarra Durr Davis, Darryl Durr Jr. and Jamar Durr, Siblings: Gwendolyn Holt, Dewey A. (Sharon) Johnson, Creola Still, and a host of Nieces and Nephews.
He is predeceased by his Daughter Kimberly Ann Bibbings, Grandson Quann Bibbings, Sibling’s Jasper “Jack” Johnson, Carrie Mae Hough, Nathran “Naz” Reeves, Marvin Johnson, Lessie Johnson, Marion “Mae” Dunn.
