George Myers Iii's Obituary

George Myers III, father, mentor, master barber, and Minister was born June 1, 1961. He transitioned home to his heavenly Father June 24, 2020.

George was affectionately known by his family, friends, and community as "Pop" or "Duke," as his best friend and brother would call him. His parents, George Myers Jr. and Madis Myers, raised an athletic, charismatic, and heart-centered son. To know him was to love him but test him, and you'd find out why he was known as "Pop." He was a true legend in his hometown of Bridgeton, New Jersey. He loved to laugh and would break out in a song or a sermon out of nowhere. Pop was a man of the people and he will be missed dearly.

He was a multi-sport athlete, making the local papers and garnering the attention of college and professional scouts for being outstanding in baseball, basketball, and football. Pop was a triple threat, leading Bridgeton's City, Secondary, High School Leagues to victories from 1974- 1979. After graduating from Bridgeton High School, he attended West Virginia University Potomac State College, in 1979. This was also the year he became a father for the first time.

Pop returned home after a couple of years. It turns out he liked playing sports more than attending classes. Once home, he got right back to training and playing for the city's baseball league. He also began mentoring youth. His involvement in several youth programs ignited his passion for social work, so Pop eventually enrolled in Cumberland County College to study Sociology.

Pop represented the south side well. As a resident of Mill Street and then Maple Woods Gardens, he began helping up and coming athletes train, became a father figure for at-risk youth, and eventually started work as a counselor at Ranch Hope for Boys. It was also during this period Pop attended Philadelphia College of Bible (Cairn University). He was ordained a minister at his home church, Union
Baptist Temple.

Pop fathered 5 more children and was married twice in his lifetime. Although all his children are well into adulthood, they still refer to him as "daddy." He eventually became a professional barber, working in shops across the Atlantic City area. His talent earned him the position of resident barber for the Atlantic City Surf, Pro Baseball team for many years. Barbering is something Pop was passionate about. This career gave him the opportunity to put all his talents and skills to work. His clients wouldn't just get a haircut, they would get wise counsel, prayer, and encouragement. Pop was strong, a man of valor, and persistent. He turned obstacles into opportunities to reflect and minister the Gospel of the redeeming grace of Jesus Christ. He used his personal struggles to encourage others, giving all glory to God.

Pop was predeceased by his sister Connie Colson, father George, and mother Madis.

He is survived by his daughters, Nakeia Homer, Shamica Myers, Latoya Myers, and Ebony Myers; sons TyRell McAllister and one he never met, but loved; sister Alberta "Lois" Morgan; brother Kevin Myers; 11 grandchildren; partner, Cherry and a host of nieces, nephews, god-brothers and god-sisters. George "Pop" Myers III left this earth telling his children he was "alright." He said his life was in God's hands. He told every doctor and nurse attending to him "either way, I'm healed."

"But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with His stripes we are healed." - Isaiah 53:5.
