Helen L. Johnson was born on Sept. 9, 1928 to the late Bertha and Edgar Lee, Sr. Helen departed this life Saturday, March 22, 208 after a brief illness.
Helen attended the Philadelphia public school systems and attended W. Philadelphia High School in 1943. Shortly thereafter, Helen worked as a First Class Machinist at the Philadelphia Navy Yard during WWII. Helen began her career at Strawbridge & Clothier as a "Sales girl" in the Millinery Dept. in 1951. Over the years she was promoted and retained a position as Collection Supervisor for the remainder of her forty two (42) years of employment.
In March, 1957 Helen and her husband, Albert S. Johnson moved their family from S. Philadelphia to W. Philadelphia where they raised their children. She later separated and then divorced. She then met Fredrick H. Kinsey, who became her "Life Partner" for over forty (40) years until his death in 2004.
Helen was a longtime member of the White Rock Baptist Church located at 53rd & Chestnut Sts., She was also a member of the Helping Hands Ministry and attended church regularly before moving to NJ in 2005.
Helen was a lover of reading and of music and was blessed with a lovely singing voice. She participated as a member of the neighborhood Block Club on Yewdall Street. One of Helen's favorite hobbies was sewing and she made all of her children's cloths for school, Holidays, Graduation and also Weddings. She also dabbled in art and drawings which were displayed on the walls of her home. Helen was a very social person and was very loving with everyone. Her neighbors loved her and there is nothing she would not do for them.
After her retirement she became more active with her grandchildren. She nurtured and supported them while they attended school and even into their later years. Helen was a wonderful mother and grandmother and dedicated her life to her children and grandchildren.
Helen leaves to cherish her memories her loving and devoted daughters and son Sharron H. Moseley, Mkiwa Khalid, and Eric S. Johnson, daughter in law Denise Johnson, Brothers Edgar E. Lee and Jerry Hayes, Sisters Catherine Smith, Lois Worthy, Joan Pogue, Shirley Baskerville (Predeceased), eight (8) grandchildren, ten (10) Great grandchildren, and one (1) Great Great Grandchild.
Services will be held Friday, March 28, 2008 at 12 noon at the First Baptist Church, Washington Ave., Richland, NJ where friends may view 2 hours prior to services. Interment will be held at the Siloam Cemetery, Valley Ave., Vineland immediately following services.
