Howard I
Valentine
November 16, 1954 – December 1, 2024
It is with both profound sadness and immense love that we remember Howard Lincoln Irving Valentine, born on November 16, 1954, in Bridgeton, NJ, to Ernestine Alice Valentine and Elmer Walter Adams. Howard departed this life on December 1st, 2024, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire and uplift us.
A man of faith and devotion, Howard served as a Deacon & Sound Tech at Spirit Life Fellowship Church, where his love for God guided his every action. After thirty-two years of membership, to say he was merely a man of faith, would be an understatement. Howard was a man of passion—passion for family, for friends, for music, and for life itself. He was a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend whose warmth, wit, and wisdom brought joy to all who knew him.
Howard's life was a mosaic of many vibrant passions. Whether it was the melodies of his guitar, the equations in his math classroom, or the thrill of the open road on his motorcycle, Howard lived fully. He was not only a math professor but a mentor, a father figure to many, and a beacon of unconditional support. His legacy is one of kindness, humor, and an ever-present willingness to share his wisdom.
Though Howard did not have children of his own, he was a father to many, guiding them with patience and care, whether through the lens of mathematics or the joy of music. His lessons were not confined to textbooks; they extended to life itself—how to approach challenges with grace, how to laugh in the face of adversity, and how to love deeply and selflessly.
Howard's musical talents were many, beginning with the cornet in his youth and evolving into his love for sound production, bass, and electric guitars. He played in several bands over the years, including the East Coast Connection, God's Song, and, most notably, *Howard Valentine & The Prophets of Love*. The latter was a regular fixture at Salem Community College, where Howard not only shared his music but his spirit.
He organized campus Coffee House fundraisers, raising money for the Arlene Kelley Book Grant Award, and entertained students, faculty, and friends across New Jersey and Delaware.
Academically, Howard was a man of intellect and dedication. A graduate of Salem High School (Class of 1973), where he was known for his athleticism, playing football, baseball, and wrestling, Howard chose a path of education over professional sports. He earned an Associate of Science degree from Wesley College in 1975, a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from the University of Delaware in 1978, and a Master's Degree in Education from Wilmington College (now Wilmington University) in 1999.
Howard's professional journey included roles at Bechtel Construction, Nuclear Energy Consultants, and Enercon Services, before finding his true calling in academia. He spent more than 25 years at Salem Community College, where he began as an adjunct professor and eventually became an Associate Professor of Mathematics. He served as Chair of the Mathematics Department from 2001 to 2004, and his contributions to the reform of developmental education at SCC are still felt today. Howard's positive attitude, mentorship, and patient guidance shaped the lives of countless students and faculty members.
Howard was predeceased by his parents, Ernestine Alice Valentine and Elmer Walter Adams. He is survived by his devoted brother, Elmer Walter Valentine, and his cherished nieces and nephews: Elmer Walter Valentine II (Lauren), LaShelle Valentine (Sean), and great-nephews Joseph, Gavin, Quinton, and Julian. He also leaves behind a host of cousins, friends, and students whose lives were forever touched by his generosity, wisdom, and boundless spirit.
Howard's memory will endure in the music he played, the lessons he taught, and the love he shared so freely. Though he is deeply missed, his legacy lives on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest in peace, Howard. Your love, laughter, and light will never fade. And Rest.
