Ida Mae Payne's Obituary

Ida Mae Payne (Nee Smith) of Woodstown formally of Swedesboro passed away July 11th, 2023 at her home. Born in Swedesboro August 12th, 1932, she was the daughter of the late George and Grace Smith. Ida's education started at the Richardson Avenue School then onto Swedesboro High School where she was in the graduating class of 1950.

Her early childhood church experience started at St. Paul UAME and then she moved to First Baptist of Swedesboro. As Ida entered her freshman year, she laid her eyes on a senior who had just returned from his services in World War II. It turned out to be a long courtship but nevertheless, their curfew was at 10pm and her mother Grace would clear her throat at 9:56pm to give him the signal. Ida married Henry (Hank) Payne, June 23rd, 1951. They had the biggest wedding of the year given by her brother Isaac "Ike" Smith Sr.

They were predeceased by four children and out of this union God blessed them with four additional children: Deborah Harris (Stanley), Thomasa Payne, twin sons Demetrius Payne (Dawn), and predeceased by Dwight Payne (Linda).

Ida was a true housewife and mother. Her joy was in raising children and dogs. She stayed busy as the neighborhood babysitter. Ida was active at First Baptist Church, singing on the choir, youth choir advisor, and Sunday school teacher. She was a board member at Kingsway high school and a band mother. Her devotion to the Lord was remarkable that she remembered every book of the bible and tons of bible verses to guide her family. Everyone that knew her and called her on the phone, you always heard her answer "Praise Jesus!"

She leaves behind her memory and legacy to grandchildren Stanley Harris, Dawn Harris, Demas Harris (Princess), She'lah Webster (Oscar), Shani Payne, Austin Payne, 10 great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, one brother Isaac L. Smith Sr. (Kate), a special niece Claudine Ferrell, a special nephew Isaac L. Smith Jr. (Margaretta), an adopted daughter Helene Harvey (Tim), and a host of nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her sister Charlotte Smith and sister in-law Kate Smith. She also leaves behind, The Gems of Calvary Hill Church, a special friend Mary Jane "Sister B" Brasco (Pastor Donald Brasco – predeceased), numerous cousins and friends, and her side kick fur baby Valentino.
