Irene Margaret Coles Tunis-Brown, was born in Palmyra, VA. May 10, 1935. When she was 7 months old her mother, Margaret Washington Coles, passed away and she was nurtured by her Grandmother Willie Holland while her father worked. After her father Issac Coles went north to find fruitful labor he married his wife Irene Pitts.
At this point in her journey she graduated from Salem High School and attended Pilgrim State Hospital, Amityville, NY which would train her for the years she worked at the Vineland Developmental Center in New Jersey. She returned later to marry Edwin Tunis, Sr. Together they were blessed with 4 children; Edwin, Jr.; Isaac; Irene and Michael. After being married, she worked at Anchor Hocking Glass until 1968, then she began her career at Vineland Developmental Center, also servicing as part of Communications Workers of America - CWA - Management and as their union representative her diligence and passion for receiving rewards while humbling doing her work. She retired in1998. After she retired from the Center she married the late Rev. George Paul Brown Sr. (deceased). Her hobbies included motorcycle riding, bowling, softball, and of course friends and fashion.
Death came to her suddenly on Monday August 22, 2022 in Vineland, NJ surrounded by family and clergy.
Margaret leaves to cherish her memories her sons, Isaac Tunis, Michael Tunis and daughter Irene Tunis-Valentine, special daughter Glinda Corbin, Grand-children; Elmer Walter Valentine II (Starr), Aquawn Tunis - Hill, LaShelle Valentine, Shetia Tunis - Wynn (Jordan). Great grand-children; Joseph Goetaski, Gavin Jeipel, Quinton Valentine, Andrew Howard Ross, Juilen Valentine.
She is pre-deceased by her son Edwin Tunis Jr. her sister, Helena Coles Robinson and her brother Hershel Pitts, her two husbands Edwin A. Tunis, Sr., and Rev. George Hall Brown.
She was a Post Worthy Matron Irene Chapter #15 DESPHA, Bridgeton, NJ; Post Grand O.E.S.P.H.A Flag Bearer; Zamora Temple #135, Camden, NJ; Affiliated with Henrietta Woodward Temple #1169 Elks, Pittsgrove, NJ; also was affiliated with the RED HATTERS Organization. A faith member of Truth Baptist Church in Newfield, NJ.
