James D. Bartley's Obituary


James Daniel Bartley Sr. (affectionately known as "POP"), was born on October 1, 1926 in Americus, GA to the late Lemme and Jeanie Bartley. On August 1, 2019, he passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was a dedicated member of St. Matthew Baptist Church in Williamstown, NJ.
James attended Welcome Elementary School in Americus, GA before migrating to Greenwich, NJ. James married Eula Mae Dairsow, on August 7, 1943 a union that lasted over 68 years. As their family grew, James and Eula moved to Hopewell, NJ; eventually settling in Bridgeton, NJ.


In 1958, he began working for John B. Kelly for Brickwork Construction in Philadelphia, PA. After working more than 30 years he retired as a General Laborer Forman. While working for John B. Kelly, James mentored and employed many young men including all his sons. He worked many years helping build large corporate buildings in New Jersey and Pennsylvania such as Princeton University and the first Casinos in Atlantic City, NJ. James enjoyed listening to music, watching sports, western movies and detective shows. He also, enjoyed cooking and on any given Sunday you would find a delicious hot meal he prepared for his family and friends. He cherished every moment he shared with his wife, children, grandchildren, his many relatives and friends. He was the loving, wise, dedicated, motivating leader of his family. We were truly blessed and privileged to have had a father, grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend that loved us unconditionally.


James was predeceased by his wife Eula Mae (Dairsow) Bartley; sons Richard Wayne Bartley, James( Deborah) Bartley and Daniel (Marcella) Bartley; daughter Shirley J. (Bartley) Cannon; grandsons Jonathan Bartley and Anthony Bartley Jr; great granddaughter Mikayla Mosley; brothers Lonnie Woodward, Big Baby Woodward, Josh Woodward and Leonard Bartley; Sisters, Lamptine Martin, Christine Armstrong, Mary Lawson and Limmie Jean Engram.
He leaves to cherish his legacy seven sons John Bartley, Vincent (Betty)Bartley, of Millville, NJ, Nathaniel Bartley, Terry (Yoshida) Bartley of Bowie, MD, Bruce Bartley, Anthony (Vanessa) Bartley, Michael Bartley and host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many endearing friends.
