John E
Hilton
October 14, 1936 – July 4, 2020
John E. Hilton 83 of Bridgeton transitioned peacefully Saturday, July 4, 2020 in Cumberland Manor. He was born in Clarendon County, South Carolina on October 14, 1936 to the late Henry and Katie Hilton. John, the youngest of his siblings, was raised in a loving home with seven sisters (Emma Russell, Katherine Hilton, Illa Murray, Fannie Murray, Louise Mathis, Annie Keels, Marie Brown) and four brothers (James, Thomas, Henry and Moses Hilton) who all preceded him in death. He was formally educated in the Clarendon County School System in South Carolina. During his years in South Carolina, John began his spiritual journey as a member of Light Hill Baptist Church.
Following his desire to have a better life, John matriculated to Bridgeton, NJ in 1955. He became employed by Harry Dare Plumbing and was a stellar employee for twenty-five years. Wisely, John used this time to perfect his trade which led to him becoming a Master Plumber. At this time, he moved his membership to Union Baptist Church under the pastorate of Reverend Davis and became active within the membership of the church.
On June 3, 1972, John E. Hilton married Ernestine Doughty. Due to their union, John moved his membership to Greater Refuge Church located in Philadelphia, PA.
A Life of Service & Love
During his many years at Greater Refuge, John was ordained and licensed as a Deacon by Apostle H. D. Jones. In addition to serving as a Deacon, for over forty years, he was an integral part of the Brotherhood Auxiliary of Greater Refuge and served as a mentor to the youth of his church. He was known as a father figure to many within the church and in his community. You could always find him encouraging the youth to gain an education and to strive to reach their dreams.
John was also open with the talents that God have to him. As a Master Plumber, he did not mind sharing his knowledge with those who were eager to learn the Plumbing trade. His passion to educate and expand led to the fulfillment of his dream of operating his own company. In 1991, he established John Hilton Plumbing which he operated dutifully until his health started to fail.
Some of his favorite past times were barbecuing and outdoor activities. He would eagerly look forward to his church's annual picnic held in Parvis Park located in Pittsgrove, NJ. Along with his wife, he loved coordinating and hosting this event for the church as it was an opportunity for members to deepen their connection and bond through faith and fellowship. His ability to connect with diverse generations was a blessing and it will greatly be missed.
A Life of Legacy
John E. Hilton leaves to cherish his memory his beautiful wife of forty-eight years, Ernestine Hilton of Bridgeton, NJ, four Godchildren; Monica Spady, Desiree McCall, Sheila Lee, Charles Fears Jr. and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends. His hearty laugh and warm spirit will greatly be missed.
