John Robert
Webb
May 21, 1945 – October 1, 2023
John Robert Webb was born on May 21, 1945 in Vineland, NJ to Ardella Ann Webb and Clarence (Cliff) Bloomfield. He was named after his two uncles. He was affectionately called "John Robert" or "Johnny" by anyone who knew him growing up and throughout his life.
John was a life member of Mt. Pisgah Methodist Church. In later years, he served on the Trustee Board.
John graduated from Vineland High School in 1964. In high school, he served as co-president of the Student Council and was voted the most cooperative student of his class. John was a good athlete who lettered in three sports (football, basketball and track & field) at Vineland High. His senior year he anchored the winning boys mile relay team winning the South Jersey open at the Penn Relays. He won the Group IV quarter mile state championship that same year.
After high school, John obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Social Studies and English in 1968 from Glassboro State College where he participated in basketball.
John married his high school sweetheart, Gayle (George) in 1969. Together they had two children, Jennifer (husband Anthony) and Michael (wife Denise). John was a wonderful grandfather to his grandchildren (Thomas, Alise and Makai).
John began his career teaching history. He spent thirty-four years with the New Jersey Department of Corrections retiring in 2011 as Supervisor of the Minimum Unit at Southwoods State Prison.
John was a history buff. He loved military history and was particularly knowledgeable about everything relating to the US Civil War. He enjoyed playing pool and spent many nights at the Q-Ball on Landis Avenue and competing in area pool tournaments. Every spring, Gayle would become a "track widow" as John "rode the circuit" attending all of the area's local high school track meets. John never missed a Penn Relays. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time and talking trash with his track buddies.
John was predeceased by his parents and step-father Frank Toney. In addition to his family, he leaves to cherish his memory sister Mary Frances Kollock, cousin/sister Paula Webb-Cheeks (Bernard) and cousin/brother Brian Webb, a host of cousins, nieces and nephews and church family.
