Joseph C. Aiken, Jr.

With gratitude to God for a life well lived and memories that will endure, we celebrate the life and legacy of Joseph Charles Aiken Jr., whose journey was marked by faith, service, family, and perseverance.

Joseph was born in Philadelphia on September 1, 1958, to Joseph Charles Aiken Sr. and Esther Lou Hollis-Aiken. As the eldest son among four children born to this union, he naturally embraced the role of leader and protector, setting an example for those who followed.

At an early age, Joseph publicly professed his faith in Jesus Christ and was baptized at New Galilee Baptist Church, the church founded by his beloved grandfather, Rev. George D. Aiken Sr., in North Philadelphia. His spiritual roots remained an important part of the foundation upon which he built his life.

Following the passing of his birth mother, Joseph’s family grew when his father married Jayne E. Hill-Aiken. Through that union, three additional siblings were welcomed into the family, expanding the bonds of love and kinship that would shape his life.

His educational journey began at Whittier Elementary School and continued through Leeds Junior High School. Later, when the family relocated to New Jersey, he attended Memorial Junior High School in Willingboro before graduating from John F. Kennedy High School. During his high school years, Joseph sang in the combined gospel choir for Willingboro and JFK High School. He also showcased his athletic gifts on the football field, but it was on the basketball court that he truly flourished. Standing an impressive 6 feet 5 inches tall, he used his height, skill, and determination to become a formidable player, developing a lifelong passion for the game.

After graduating from high school, Joseph answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army. During nine years of honorable service, he distinguished himself through discipline, leadership, and excellence, rising to the rank of Sergeant (E-6). His love for basketball continued while in uniform, earning him a place on the official Army basketball team. He traveled extensively with his teammates, competing in tournaments across numerous locations and earning awards and accolades that reflected both his exceptional talent and unwavering commitment.

Joseph met his first wife, Trisha Alford, in June 1978 while she was attending National Guard Summer Camp training at Fort Hood, Texas. They were married on May 29, 1982, at Friendship Baptist Church in a ceremony officiated by Rev. Willie Bartee. During Joseph’s military assignments, they welcomed their children both overseas and stateside: Joseph III in Frankfurt, Germany, on August 24, 1983; Christopher in Eschenbach, Germany, on September 18, 1984; and James in Austin, Texas, on March 11, 1988, following Joseph’s final assignment at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, before concluding his military service in December 1987.

Joe’s deep faith served as his guiding light throughout his life. He passionately preached, sang, and played the guitar at churches across Europe, Oklahoma, and Texas, eventually expanding his ministry into Christian music production. Joseph later became a licensed minister at his home church, Upper Room Missionary Baptist Church. In support of various ministerial associations, he was ordained by his pastor, Atiba Rose, as an Associate Minister of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church through the Bethany Baptist Association. He was also a proud member of the Baptist Ministers’ Conference of Woodbury and Vicinity and during a season of ministry served as the Minsiterial Leader for Bethany Baptist Assosciation’s Camp Cedar Knoll facility.

Following his military career and relocation from Texas, Joseph returned to the Philadelphia and South Jersey area. While attending Mount Calvary Baptist Church with his cousin, Jewel, a providential introduction changed the course of his life. Jewel introduced him to Leslie Redman Aiken, the woman who would become his beloved wife and faithful companion on June 30, 2012. Together they shared fourteen wonderful years of marriage, building a relationship grounded in love, friendship, and mutual devotion until his passing.

Joseph was preceded in death by his father, Bishop Joseph Charles Aiken Sr.; his mother, Esther L. Aiken; his sister, Gail B. Aiken; and his brother, Darryl Aiken.

He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Leslie Aiken; his children, Joseph C. Aiken III (Cierra), Christopher Isaiah Aiken (Amber), James Aiken, Isaac Redman (Chauney), and Vicky Redman; and his nine beloved grandchildren: Joseph C. Aiken IV, Caliah Aiken, Xavier Aiken, Alexander Aiken, Haiden Redman, Carter Redman, Samir Redman, Jayce Redman and Jacoby Eli.

He is also survived by his loving mother, Jayne E. Olivia Hill-Aiken; his siblings, Stella Chancey, George D. Aiken III (Marcia), Karen Myles (Mico), Bishop Kevin M. Aiken, Lisa Barr Litwinko (Kevin), and Pastor Carlton L. Aiken Sr. (Brandee); his aunts, Marian and Rebecca; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended church family, and cherished friends.

Joseph will be remembered as a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, minister, veteran, athlete, and friend. Whether in the pulpit, on the basketball court, in military service, or among those he loved most, he carried himself with strength, determination, unwavering confidence, and an infectious sense of humor. His warm smile could light up a room, and his presence left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered. His life reminds us that true greatness is measured not merely by accomplishments but by the lives touched through love, sacrifice, and steadfast commitment.

Though his earthly journey has ended, the legacy of Joseph Charles Aiken Jr. lives on through his family, the memories he created, and the many people whose lives were enriched by knowing him. May those who mourn find comfort in the bonds he forged, inspiration in the example he set, and peace in the enduring promise that love leaves an imprint that time can never erase.
