Joseph Sylvester Moore, Jr.'s Obituary

Joseph Sylvester Moore, Jr., affectionately known as "Junior," "Uncle Jr.," or "Joe" to his family and friends, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2025, at the age of 85. He was born on October 28, 1939, in Salem County, New Jersey, to the late Joseph Moore, Sr., and Ella B. Moore.

Joe, the sole brother of his five sisters—Ellen Beatrice, Isabel, Martha, Ella, and Marcella—enjoyed a happy childhood in Quinton, New Jersey, with his devoted loving parents. He held a special pride in being the only son to his father and initiated a tradition of having only one son who shared that unique distinction. He felt honored to be the sole male of his era and a part of generations to come known as "The Only Sons." As the only boy, he was responsible for outdoor chores and assisting his father on the family farm, regardless of the weather conditions. However, he managed to skip the household chores, which was quite a pleasant arrangement!

Joe's academic journey began at Harmony School, the only school in his community dedicated to educating African American children. This one-room schoolhouse, which served students from kindergarten through sixth grade, nurtured his passion for education and ultimately led him to a lifelong career as a teacher.

After graduating from Salem High School, Joe received a track scholarship to Cheyney University, formerly known as Cheyney State Teachers College. There, he excelled in mathematics and earned a Bachelor's Degree. His love for learning and his commitment to shaping young minds led him to a distinguished 43-year career in the Philadelphia School District. During his tenure, he dedicated himself to fostering critical thinking in his students.

Beyond his work in the Philadelphia School District, Joe's passion for guiding youth extended to his work at the Youth Study Center, where he mentored and supported troubled teens on their journey toward becoming stable and constructive members of society.

Joe's faith was the cornerstone of his life. As a child, he joined Haven United Methodist Church in Quinton, NJ, where he actively participated in the choir, Methodist Youth Fellowship, and Sunday School. Later, while residing in Pennsylvania, he rededicated himself to his faith and his home church. He held various leadership positions, including co-director of the Haven Youth Project, also known as MYF, where he once again showcased his mathematical expertise. He was also a member of the Men's Choir, Senior Choir, Trustee, United Methodist Men, and the Staff Pastor-Parish Relations Committee.

Brother Joe was also a devoted life member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Beta Gamma Chapter, initiated in 1960. His unwavering leadership and dedication to the fraternity were evident in his pivotal role in the Beta Gamma Foundation, which provided scholarships to young men and women pursuing higher education. As a past Basileus, he took great pride in mentoring and uplifting others through the values of Omega. After retirement, Brother Joe proudly wore Omega paraphernalia daily.

Even in his golden years, Joe remained active. He founded his own business, One Moore Beautiful Lawn Service, where he continued to exemplify his unwavering work ethic. Known for his impeccable sense of style, he had a particular fondness for custom-made hats, always making a striking impression as a well-dressed man. Joe was also a formidable Pinochle player and an original member of The Card Party People's Club in Philadelphia, where he found joy and camaraderie.

Above all, Joe cherished his family. He was a proud and devoted father to his children, and nothing brought him greater joy than talking about his children and grandchildren, whom he loved deeply.

Joe was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Ella B. Moore; his beloved daughter, Sherri; his grandson, Noah; and his sisters, Ellen Beatrice, Isabel, Martha, and Ella. He is survived by his children, Monique (Eric), Stephanie, Joseph III (Syreeta), his stepson Andre, his sister Marcella, and his grandchildren Hafeesah, Mecca, Robert, Micah, Ajahnae a.k.a. A.J., Joseph IV a.k.a. Joe- Joe, Joselyn, and Malic, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and his beloved fraternity brothers throughout the world.

In addition to his loved ones, Joe leaves behind a legacy of love, education, service, and unwavering faith. His impact on his family, students, fraternity brothers, and community will be cherished and remembered for generations to come.
