Obituary

Joseph Henry Smith, born September 25, 1948, departed this life on March 3, 2015, at his home.  Joe was born to Herbert L. Smith and Aloha (Wallace) Smith.  He enjoyed playing little league baseball for the cross transportation as a child.  He also played Midget League Football for Goldberg's.  As he got older he grew out of little league and moved on to play what was known as Babe Ruth on the onized team.  As an adult Joe also played city league softball.  We believe his first love though, was shooting pool.  He became the "pool shark" of the family.  While growing up Joe did enjoy the holidays with his family on Nichols Street.  One in particular was Thanksgiving, where all he wanted was the cranberry sauce.  We knew that when he came, there had better be some cranberry sauce.

Joe worked at Minots for several years until their closing.  He also worked at Kellogg's for several years until his retirement.

Joe was very active in the Garden State Elk's Organization.  He was the Exalted Ruler of the Samual J. Roberts Lodge #979 until closing.  After closing he transferred to the Pride of Camden Lodge #83.  He was inducted into the Past Exalted Ruler Council #21.  He was a member of the New Jersey State Association.  He received New Jersey Past State President's Honors.  He was also a part of the National District Deputy Council as well as the New Jersey District Deputy Council.  He was appointed Special District Deputy Emeritus.  His last honor was Past Grand Exalted Ruler.

Joe leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Annie P. Smith; three sons, Thomas Williams (Karel) of Connecticut, Curtis Custis (Jeannine) of Williamstown, and Joel Smith (Nakia) of Hopewell; two daughters, Dana E. Byers of Bridgeton, NJ and Nicole D. Square (Tye) of Pennsylvania; three step children, Cordelia Roberts and James Coleman of Vineland, NJ and Sonya Roberts of Willingboro, NJ; twenty-five grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren; five brothers, Ronald (JoAnn), William, Walt, Jeffrey, and George Smith; two sisters, Aloha Smith Oatman (Leon) and Lisa Powell.  A host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

He was predeceased by his father Herbert Smith Sr., his mother Aloha Smith, and brothers Herbert L. Smith Jr., Thomas B. Smith, James A. Smith and Albert L. Smith.

Joe was a wonderful person and most definitely will be greatly missed.

Service will be 12pm Saturday, March 14, 2015 at John Wesley United Methodist Church, 90 Baltimore Ave, Bridgeton, NJ. Viewing will be 10am-11:30am. Interment will be in Fernwood Cemetery, Hopewell Township.
