Layton B.
Jones, Jr.
September 11, 1944 – February 22, 2025
Layton Brinkley Jones, Jr., went peacefully home to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 22, 2025, after a long illness. He was fondly known as "Snookie" aka "Munchkin", and he was the son of the late Layton and Laura Jones. He was born on September 11, 1944, in Salem, NJ.
Layton grew up in a home with three sisters. He was educated in the Quinton and Salem Public Schools. Layton also attended Cumberland County Technical School and graduated from Carpentry and Culinary classes. He was always up for a challenge, so he continued his education by graduating from In His Image Bible College.
During his youth, Layton attended Mt. Vernon holy church under the leadership of his grandmother, Pastor Miranda Pitts. He participated in church activities with his sisters. On many occasions they traveled with Elder Pitts as a choir singing the songs of Zion.
Layton learned to become a guitar player like his father and later became a musician for New Mt. Calvary Baptist Church where he was a member and served in many areas while there during his 20 plus years. He enjoyed singing with the New Mt. Calvary Male Chorus and traveling with the members. He served as a van driver by transporting members to and from the church. Later he returned to Mt. Vernon Holy Church under the leadership of Pastor Loretta Pierce.
Layton worked in many occupations, mainly with Foster Forbes/Kerr Glass until his retirement. He did not stay idle but continued working after retirement by accepting work with the Pleasantville, NJ School System until his sickness. One of his hobbies was riding his motorcycle with friends and also to work. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and family.
He leaves to cherish his memories his wife Peggy Jones of Glassboro, NJ, his daughters: Peggy Briggs of Glassboro, NJ, Margaret and Donnel Stafford of Bridgeton, NJ, one sister Loretta Pierce of Bridgeton, NJ, 7 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He is predeceased by his parents Layton & Laura Jones, daughter Andrea Jones, sisters: Barbara Jordan, Miranda Hopson, brothers-in-law David Hopson, Ernest Pierce, mother-in-law Dorothy Smith Jamison and sister-in-law Sharon Smith Slater.
