Madis
Myers
April 21, 1938 – March 5, 2020
Mother Madis Myers was born April 21, 1938. She went home to be with the Lord March 5, 2020.
A dedicated woman of God, loving mother, devoted grandmother, honorable friend, and surrogate to a host of god-children, "Mae" was loved and cherished by her family and community.
As a woman of great storytelling abilities, it's not surprising to learn Mae lived a rich and full life. She was born in Nashville Georgia to the late Connie Coachman and Hosie Jackson; but lived with her paternal grandmother, Fannie Ward Jackson, most of her childhood. After a racist encounter that threaten her life, Mae fled the segregated south in the middle of the night. Laying in a buggy, covered in quilts her grandmother made, Mae was shipped up north to Philadelphia to live with her great aunt Rosa Whitehead. She later moved to Bridgeton New Jersey, with her great aunt Lillie Whitehead Green.
In 1961, she married the late George Myers Jr. and settled into her life as a wife and mother. Although George and Mae went on to live separate lives, they remained close friends until his death.
A long-standing resident of the city of Bridgeton, Mae attended BHS, worked at Seabrook Frozen Foods, Theber Sewing Factory, Test City Day Care, and a Food Service supervisor at Tri-County Community Action Agency.
Mae was a great woman of Faith and Prayer! She spent many nights interceding and praying for her family and friends. Mae was a member of Union Baptist Temple, Bethany Baptist Church, and Tabernacle of Faith Christian Center. She served on the Choir, Missionary Boards, Mother Board, Prayer Line, and Superintendent of Sunday School.
Mae was an activist, working closely with other parents to effect change in childhood education. She was a parent liaison for Title 1, Chapter 1 within the Bridgeton Public School System, and traveled the country rallying for underprivileged and undervalued youth.
Mae's calling was to nourish souls from the inside out. Preparing numerous meals for Sunday Dinners at Union Baptist Temple, which she referred to as her home church, for families, neighbors, children, weddings, funerals and private dinners at Dignitary homes, Mae was an excellent cook, meticulous and serious about serving her scrumptious food with LOVE!
The story of Madis "Mae" Myers spans just under 82 years. It is impossible to reach its depth in just a few paragraphs. But when you say her name from the north down to the south, 2 things are sure to follow: "brilliant cook" and "mom/granny."
Mae was predeceased by her daughter Connie Colson and husband George; survived by her daughter, Dr. Alberta "Lois" Morgan (Anthony Morgan Sr); sons, George Myers III and Kevin Myers; 11 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren, 3 Godsons, Mike, Tom and Danny, 2 Goddaughters, Louise and Barbara, Brothers Carlise and Eugene and a Sister Barbara.
Her favorite scriptures were: 2 Chronicles 7:14, Proverbs 4:7, Jeremiah 29:11, Psalm 92:14, Titus 2:2-3, Proverbs 16:31, Psalm 27:25
She is now with the King of Glory!!!
