Marlene E Fussell's Obituary

June 27, 1936, Steve and Helen (Gilbert) Johnson welcomed their first of four children into this world. Marlene was born and raised in Camden, New Jersey. She gained her wings and peacefully transitioned on Monday April 11, 2022, at the vibrant age of 85.

A TIME TO SERVE

Marlene accepted the Lord as her personal Savior at an early age. She was baptized and gave her life to Christ at Antioch Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. M. L. Henry. Marlene was appreciative of her aunts, Annie Gilbert-Johnson, Ceola Merrell, and Eva Williams, who guided her into a Holy lifestyle.  While at Antioch under the leadership of Rev. John O. Parker her ministries included the Food and Clothing Ministry as well as The Senior Ushers. Marlene was well known for properly cutting those corners while marching for the Lord, a skill she learned from her late Uncle Ralph Merrell. After retirement she moved to Vineland, NJ to be closer to her daughter. It was at this time she moved her membership to Union Baptist Temple of Bridgeton, NJ under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Albert L. Morgan. While at Union she immediately united with the Senior Missionary and Usher Ministries of which she was a diligent and dedicated servant for the Lord. Marlene never was anxious about her health as her motto was "I put my health in the Lord's Hands". She loved to dance and praise the Lord as she gave Him glory for what He did in her life.

A TIME TO LEARN

Marlene attended the Camden Public School System. Proudly graduating, with honors, from Camden High School in 1953. She was a vibrant cheerleader. A privilege not often given to African Americans at that time. She excelled with anything dealing with mathematics and business. She understood the importance of education and later pursued opportunities to further her knowledge to enhance her career.

A TIME TO LIVE

Marlene met and married the late Vernon Fussell. The Lord blessed this union with three beautiful children. These bundles of joy included Vernon (Chucky) Jr., Cheryl, and Norris (Chip-predeceased). Marlene loved and nurtured her children. She instilled in them the importance of education, treating others with love and respect, and ultimately having God fearing values.

A TIME TO WORK

Marlene worked as a payroll bookkeeper for the Strawbridge and Clothier chain store for 15 years. She was employed by the Camden County Health Service Center, Lakeland Hospital, as a payroll specialist until her retirement in 1990.

A TIME TO SOCIALIZE

Marlene was a social butterfly. She enjoyed talking with people and spending time with her friends. While in her presence you would have received a nickname especially for you. Looking for Marlene? Try finding her on bus trips, at theaters, shopping at the outlets, in the kitchen cooking up some tasty potato salad and chitterlings or trying new restaurants, tasting to see if their bread and butter was acceptable. She loved going on cruises and sightseeing the world. Marlene enjoyed Bible study at noon, she loved reading the Bible, novels, and the Black Tribune Newspaper. Marlene believed that reading was knowledge that could never be taken from you. Marlene loved football especially the San Francisco 49ers. She was a diehard fan. She knew the stats of the sport as well as anyone. Marlene was also an avid bowler. She was a teammate on a Camden County Bowling League. Family was everything to Marlene. She knew the family tree. Everyone would say "ask Aunt Marlene she would know". Time spent with children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren was precious to her. "Little Grandmom" as the great grands called her was truly loved. Marlene said in her own words, "In spite of trials tribulations and sickness I have lived a full and happy life! TGBTG"
