Surrounded by her loving family, Mary Jane Jones passed on to the eternal life with the Lord early Sunday Morning, December 20, 2020.
Mary was born on January 3, 1943 in Wadley, Georgia to the late Edgar Thomas Sr. and Lucy Mae Morgan. Due to the separation of her parents Mary moved to New Jersey as a young child in 1949 with her father and the late Allie Mae Thomas. In 1960, Mary met and married her beloved husband of 59 years, the late Joe B. Jones who sadly departed this life eight months ago.
Mary was the mother of nine children, eight girls and one son. In addition to her children, she raised five of her grandchildren. Mary is also the third born of twenty-five siblings between both of her parents.
Mary received her education in the Bridgeton School System. She worked several years in factories which included: Venice Maid, Murbeck Knitting, Vineland Foods, and Seabrook Bros. However, Marys' love for children became her permanent place of employment as a childcare provider in her home where she cared for many children in the Bridgeton area.
Mary became a member of St. Phillips Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Levi Lockamy in 1981. She was a faithful active member serving as President of the Number Two Choir, Pastors Aide Committee, Hospitality Committee, Kitchen Committee, and held various secretarial positions. Although she had been battling cancer and sickness over the past seven years, she remained a dedicated member and worker in the House of God. Sister Mary always prayed for her children to seek the Lord, and this too has come to pass, most of her children stood right beside her at St. Phillip's. Mary's dedication and loyalty to God and the church was beyond measures. St. John 14:1 was her most rewarding scriptures, "Let not your heart be troubled ye believe in God, believe also in me".
Mary was known as one of the best cooks in South Jersey which she enjoyed doing along with many other hobbies such as: shopping, traveling, and spending time with family spreading the love of joy around. She was an avid sports watcher and fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, Phillies, 76ers, and the Flyers. Although she was loved by many, she shared a special bond with her beloved loyal and dedicated friend, Earth Dell Logan for over fifty years. Mary had several nicknames she answered to: Pretty Lady, Young Girl, Miss America, Madea and M.J.
Mary Jane Jones leaves to cherish in her memories one son Abraham Jones (Charlotte) of Fairton, N.J. Six daughters, Angela Gilmore, Alberta Jones (Sammy) of Millville, N.J, Joanne Jones, Henrietta Jones, Susan Smith (Jesse) of Bridgeton, N.J, Mary Nelson (James) of Seabrook, N.J. She had 17 grandchildren of the 17 the five she raised, Shawn Thomas, of Cumberland Maryland, Anthony Thomas, Shirley Thomas, Angela Thomas, Natasha Molly Spencer all of Bridgeton N.J. 30 great grands and 21 great-great grandchildren. 11 sisters Louis Hill, Sara Gibbons (Mark) Lena Thomas-Dennis of Bridgeton, N.J., Julia Mincey, Jeannie Smith (Steve) of Millville, N.J, Gloria Thomas of Memphis, Tennessee, Christine Winrow of Rome, Georgia, Gloria Gibbons (Charlie) of Montgomery, Alabama, Shirley Johnson of Statesboro, Georgia, Patricia Pierce (Joe) of Elkridge, Maryland and Janie Horn of Severn, Maryland. 10 brothers, Edgar Thomas Jr. Roy Thomas (Johnnie) of Swainsboro, Georgia, Robert Abrams of Rochester, N.Y, Levorce Abrams of Philadelphia, P.A, Jerry Thomas of Rahway, N.J, Charles Thomas (Corinthian), Kenneth Thomas, Frank Thomas of Bridgeton, N.J, Donald Thomas of Mays landing, N.J, Audwin Thomas, South Carolina. Two God-Sisters, Marie Russell of Middleton, Delaware, Pauline Bennet of Dublin, Georgia. Many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and loyal friends who will miss her immensely.
Mary was predeceased by her loving husband, Joe B. Jones, parents, Edgar Thomas Sr., Lucy May Morgan, Allie Mae Thomas. Two daughters, Shirley Thomas, and Ola Mae Jones. Three sisters, Martha Wilcher, Wilhemina Abrams, Arlene Buckingham. One Sister-in-law Elmarie Thomas. One brother, Randall Thomas.
