Mildred E. (Robinson) Jenkins was born January 22, 1948, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to the late Julius Robinson and Charity Allen Robinson. Mildred was loved and cherished by her parents, and her love for them compelled her to honor their values. Mildred's mom instilled in her the importance of being lady-like, kind, and pleasant, which she embraced wholeheartedly. Mildred was "daddy's girl," and would learn many things from her dad. He was her protector and source of encouragement, inspiring her to dream big, work hard, and always do her best. He taught her that she was just. as good as anyone else, and that there wasn't anything that she could not achieve, if she put her mind to it. This empowered her to pursue her dreams and to become a source of encouragement for others, just as he had been for her.
Mildred's educational journey began in the Philadelphia Public School System, where she made her mark at the esteemed Girls High, an all-girls high school renowned for its academic excellence. Her passion for learning led her to Howard University, where she majored in early childhood education and minored in clinical nutrition. After earning her undergraduate degree, Mildred dedicated herself to teaching in the Philadelphia Public School System, realizing her dream of inspiring young minds. Her commitment to education illuminated her path as she earned her master's degree and embraced the role of Field Coordinator, determined to uphold excellence throughout the School System.
Mildred had a lot of integrity, always had confidence and knew she would be successful. She was a classy and sophisticated woman, known for her compassion toward others. She knew how to make people feel special; when speaking to someone, she would make them feel like the only person in the room.
In her personal life, Mildred found love at a young age and was briefly married to Thomas Jenkins. She loved children and was inspired to share her motherly love other so many children throughout her family: She would devote summers to multiple younger cousins, treating them as her own. Later, Mildred would have an opportunity to be a mother to a child of her own and blessed to be a grandmother of four, spreading joy and wisdom in their lives. She also had a goddaughter, Kyshia Barr.
Mildred was passionate about family, travel, music, cultivating plants, cooking, shopping, art, and African American culture. She loved to entertain, as it brought her joy to gather People together for a good time. Some of her staple dishes included delicious potato salad. mac and cheese, ribs, string beans, strawberry salad, carrot cake, and blueberry cheesecake. A couple of Mildred's breakfast favorites were scrapple and coffee; and rotisserie chicken was a lunch or dinner favorite she enjoyed during the week.
As a child, Mildred shared joyous moments with her close cousins, Benny and Debbie. Their playful antics and laughter forged a bond that lasted well into adulthood, making it difficult for Mildred when they both passed away in the same year. Now reunited, they are undoubtedly sharing laughter once again.
Over the years, Mildred was a friend to many. She had special friends who had been by her side through seasons of her life and were near and dear to her heart. A few of those friends are Elaine Johnson, since grade school, Jane Mays, from high school, Gail Robinson, from high school, Sandra Richardson, from college, Lillian Gourdine, for over 50 years, Thomasina Barr, for over 50 years, and Veronica Dorrall, for over thirty years. Each friendship added a beautiful chapter to her story. Mildred also had special connections to some of cousins, Wilhelmina Johnson, Eleanore Smalls, Saundra Lindsay, and Sabrina Harrison
Acting as a caretaker, Mildred helped her aging parents until their passing. She had also recently cared for her aging cousin, Ruth Corbitt, until her passing last year. She consistently showed a strong interest in the well-being of others. Mildred's unwavering compassion and selflessness enriched the lives of so many.
Mildred is now reunited with her beloved parents, Julius and Charity Robinson, her dear brother Charles, and many cherished aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends; all of whom welcomed her into her heavenly home with open arms.
Forever remembered as a beacon of light, Mildred will be sorely missed and her memory honored She was considered one of the matriarchs of her family. Her passing leaves a significant void in many lives, as she was deeply cherished. We celebrate the incredible impact she made and will never forget her vibrant spirit. Her life is testament to love, learning. and lifting-up people. The bonds she forged will continue through others, as her legacy continues,
Mildred is survived by her daughter, Charnea Briggs; her son-in-law, Dwayne; and her Grandchildren, Aryanna. Christopher, Micah, and Maddox, her god-daughter Kyshia. She also leaves many cousins including those of the Harrison, Lindsay, Thompson, Robinson, Smalls and Other family names. Grateful for everything she shared with them, her cousins will keep the love and support close to their hearts, as the impact she had on their lives was profound.
