Mitchell B Sye's Obituary

Mitchell Byrum Sye, Sr. was born in Camden, New Jersey on September 27, 1956 to the late Delores and Edward Handy. He was lovingly raised by his mom and dad the late Doris Jane nee Bordley and James Robert Sye. He entered into eternal rest on October 17, 2022 at approximately 1:30 PM after a long and courageous battle with prostate cancer while receiving care at the VA Hopsital in Decatur, Georgia.

Slogee as he was affectionately called, lived in Newfield, New Jersey where he enjoyed his time with cousins and other family. He was educated in the Delsea Regional School district. He learned to cook at an early age and assisted his parents with their restaurant. Slogee was often seen on the football field and played linebacker for his beloved Delsea Regional winning a championship in 1973. He moved to assist his parents with running Coral Tree apartment buildings in Los Angeles, California. While in Los Angeles he enlisted in the United States Navy on April 14, 1979. Slogee served in the Navy until his honorable discharge on January 26, 1994. He traveled to 75 different countries during his military service and often enjoyed the beaches and the local people during his travels. During his service in the military, he was awarded the following service awards and medals; Navy Achievement with Gold Star, Meritorious Unit Commendation (2), First, Second and Third Good conduct awards for April 1983, April 1987 and April 1991, Navy Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (4), South East Asia Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon (4), Navy Expeditionary Medal, Battle "E" Ribbon (2), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. He served in the Persian Gulf War back in the 80's and 90's and was at sea a total of 3 years 5 months and 2 days respectively.

After military life, Slogee lived in San Diego and attended medical training school as he had a desire to assist people from all walks of life. He slowed down when life circumstances changed. He lived in Tijuana Baha Mexico for over 20 years and was often seen sitting with his favorite 4-legged friend Africa. He loved pets and loved people. Slogee was known for his cooking and entertaining. His famous spaghetti was often a request. Although he lived over the boarder, Slogee was well respected by the locals. He lived across the street from a church and often sat with the priest discussing life and things happening in his community. He was a jack of many trades and spoke about his stern feelings regarding the latest news or how things needed to be different. Slogee loved his family and although far apart in miles, they remained close to his heart.

Slogee leaves to cherish his memories, laughs and outlook on life, daughters Katrina Nicole (Troy) and California Florence, son's Mitchell Byrum (Brandy), James Everett (Glomarie), Aaron Marcus, and Isaiah Jacob.
