Montaire
Carmichael
August 24, 1927 – July 24, 2021
Montaire Carmichael went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 24, 2021. He was born on August 24, 1927 in Trenton, NJ, to the late Lucy Carmichael and Wade Carmichael.
As a small child, his family moved to Millville, NJ, where he attended Millville Public Schools. At the age of sixteen, he volunteered to serve his country and join the military. He was too young to enlist by himself, so his mother had to sign for him. He served in the United States Army and was stationed in several countries throughout his service, including Korea. He served during the Korean War, but did not see combat. Also, he was a longtime member of the VFW in Millville, NJ.
Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, he returned to his hometown of Millville, NJ. However, he didn't stay long, as work was scarce for African Americans, at that time. In 1961, he moved to Philadelphia, PA, where he found work in the construction field. He became an expert carpenter and also worked with concrete. He worked for several contractors, including: Carson Concrete and Miller Concrete. Montaire went on to help build many center city buildings in Philadelphia, primarily on Market Street, that still stand to this day. Also, he worked on the Walt Whitman Bridge; the Delaware Memorial Bridge; and many of the casinos on the Atlantic City strip. Quickly, he rose through the ranks and became Forman on jobs. In the 1960's, he joined Local 1050 Union, which eventually became the United Brotherhood of Carpenters of Philadelphia. He was a member for over 30 years, before his retirement in 1998.
In 1964, Montaire married. A son, Alan, and two daughters, Anne and Amy, were born from this union. He loved and enjoyed spending time with his children. He also loved to hang out and travel with his granddaughter, Tamara.
Montaire enjoyed making beautiful modifications to his home. One could frequently find him on a ladder, indoors or outdoors-and many times, on the roof.
It's well known that he liked to eat, and could clean a plate. However, he liked to cook, too. He made a mean pot of navy beans and his pork chops were second to none. Another hobby, was gardening at the family house in Millville. He grew beautiful tomatoes and big collards. Moreover, hosting family events was a true joy for him. He loved to put on the Annual Family Labor Day Cookout, which was always a good time.
Montaire loved the Lord. For many years, he attended Bethel A.M.E. in Millville, NJ. Later, he enjoyed attending church services at New Bethel A.M.E. in Vineland, NJ.
Monatire leaves to cherish his memory: Two daughters, Anne Carmichael of Philadelphia, PA, and Amy Turner (Rick) of Dayton, OH; and one son, Alan Carmichael of Philadelphia, PA; sister, Florence Adams; brother, Kirby Carmichael, Sr.; Four Grandchildren, Tamara Carmichael, Jeffrey Ball, Jr., Rick Turner, Jr., and Victoria Turner; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Wade and Lucy; brothers, Mollington and Donald; sisters, Mildred, Margaret, and Leona; Grandchild, Sean; and special friend Marie C. Arthur.
