Born Regina Ann Scott to the late Arvis and Josephine Scott, in Philadelphia, PA. Regina is proceeded in death by her brother William "Billy" Scott and her sister Doris Mae Smith.
As a child in Philadelphia, Regina was a member and attended Sunday School and church at Jones Tabernacle AME Church. She spent all her summers in Newtonville, NJ with her late grandfather, William Anderson, who was one of the founders of the First Union Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and church treasurer.
Her family moved to Newtonville in June 1946, where she attended Sunday School and Church at First Union Baptist under the pastorship of the late Reverend C. Dickson and Reverend A. Robinson.
Regina attended elementary and junior high schools in the Buena Vista Township school system, she was a graduate of Vineland High School.
She met and married John Robert Layton Sr. June 1956. Regina was the devoted mother of seven children (3 deceased) Patrice, Patricia, and Donald, (surviving) Doris "Pye", Shelley, Robert (Denita) and Caryl. 14 Grandchildren, 34 Great-Grandchildren, 5 Great-Great Grandchildren and a host of other precious family, loved ones and friends.
Baptized, September 1956 at Mt. Zion Methodist Church Lawnside, NJ under the pastorship of Reverend E. Wimberly. She joined First Union Baptist Church where Reverend W. Cooper was pastoring in 1968. Regina was saved and filled with the gift of the precious Holy Ghost in 1976. Her membership remained at First Union Baptist where she served as church clerk, usher on the Senior Usher Board, and on the Pastor's Aide Committee.
Regina was employed at the Vineland Developmental Center, where she held the position of Senior Therapy Program Assistant in the Wolverton Cottage, later retiring on December 2 nd , 1999.
She was honored in 1987 by ARDC (Atlantic Rural Development Coalition) for her community service and outreach work. At that time, she served as both Assistant and Director, while living in Newtonville NJ. Regina also was the recipient of an award from the United Negro College Fund for her outstanding community services to the labor movement.
As a union activist, Regina attended the Rutgers's University Summer Institute for Labor 1979-1988, the University of Connecticut Labor Education Center, UCLEA Summer Institute for Union Women in 1988 and 1989.
