Richard Douglas Lindsey, a respected educator, mentor, tax accountant, community leader, devoted father and grandfather, passed away on Friday, April 10, 2026, following several months of illness. He was 87 years old.
Born on October 8, 1938, in Evergreen, Alabama, Richard Lindsey was raised by his parents, Henry and Phyllis Lindsey, alongside ten siblings as the tenth of eleven children. From an early age, he embraced the values of faith, education, perseverance and hard work, principles that would guide his remarkable life and career. Family remained at the center of his life, and he was known for his unwavering love, support and dedication to relatives, friends, students and community members alike.
Richard leaves behind his daughter, Flair Aimee Lindsey (Hollis Phifer), and grandson, Gabriel Terrence Lindsey Johnson, along with many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of extended yet closely knit family members and friends who will forever cherish his memory and legacy.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Phyllis Lindsey, his siblings: Frank Lindsey, Rosa Lee Davis, Annie Ruth Franklin, Ella Byrd, James Leo Lindsey, John Lindsey, Benjamin Lindsey, Jennie Faulks, Dorisca Evans and Phyllis Lindsey, and former spouse, Flair Prator Lindsey.
Education was the cornerstone of Richard’s life journey. After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Finance from Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio in 1961, he continued his academic pursuits by obtaining a Master’s Degree in Urban Education and Community Affairs from William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey. He also earned Business and Economic Certification from Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) and completed studies in Migrant Education through the State University of New York at Albany.
Richard proudly served as a United States Army Officer from 1961 to 1962 before beginning a brief tenure in the Accounting Department at Chrysler Corporation.
Soon after, he embarked upon what would become a distinguished 42-year career with the Vineland Public School System. From 1964 until his retirement in 2006, Richard served as an educator, teacher and program coordinator whose impact shaped generations of students. His commitment to education extended beyond the classroom, as he also served as Adjunct Faculty at Glassboro State College and coordinated the graduate program in Urban Education and Community Affairs at William Paterson University from 1973 to 1980.
Richard boasted an expansive resume of professional, community and social affiliations. During the course of his career, he served in varied leadership roles including Advisor for the NAACP Youth Council of Vineland; Chairperson for the Vineland Education Association (VEA) Human Relations Committee; Chairperson and Founder of the National Education Association (NEA) Minority Groups Caucus; Chairperson of the Cumberland County College EOF Community Advisory Board; Chairperson and Treasurer of the NEA Black Caucus; Member of the NEA Executive Committee; Chairperson of the Cumberland County Education Association (CCEA); and Member of the Crime Stoppers Unit of the Vineland Chamber of Commerce.
Richard’s extraordinary contributions earned him numerous honors, including the Bridgeton NAACP Achievement Award, the NJEA Human Rights Award, an appreciation certificate from the Martin Luther King Center for Social Change in Atlanta, Georgia, and recognition from the Vineland African American Community Development Corporation (CDC) during its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day event.
Last and certainly not least, Richard was a proud and active member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated for more than 60 years.
Known for his wisdom, compassion and uplifting spirit, Richard believed wholeheartedly in the transformative power of education. He often shared the philosophy: “In all my years in Education, I never came in contact with a bad student, only good students in bad circumstances. A positive attitude is the key to turning failure into success.”
Richard’s greatest joy was his family. His beloved daughter, Flair Lindsey remained a constant source of pride and love throughout his life. His happiness grew even greater with his cherished grandson, Gabriel Johnson. He took immense pride in encouraging education, growth and perseverance in future generations, just as his parents had instilled those values in him.
You better believe that Richard was a lifelong fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, Philadelphia 76ers and Philadelphia Phillies. In fact, he was rarely spotted without donning Eagles attire. Each time “Fly Eagles Fly” is heard, may his love, enthusiasm and upbeat personality be remembered fondly.
Richard Lindsey will be remembered as a devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle, educator, mentor, tax accountant, protector and friend whose influence touched countless lives across generations. His legacy of faith, service, leadership and compassion will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the many relatives, friends, caregivers and supporters who provided love, prayers, encouragement and unwavering support throughout Richard’s journey.
