Samuel L.
Vinegar
December 7, 1927 – March 19, 2026
“And they’re off”!
Those were the words Samuel Lamont Vinegar heard at the early age of 21, words that would settle deep into his bones and follow him from track to track for the next forty decades. He spent over 20 years working on racetracks across the country, chasing the rhythm of pounding hooves and fleeting promise of a winning day.
Sam was born on December 7th, 1927, to Birdie and Corine Vinegar in Cincinnati, Ohio, a city alive with movement and industry. From the very beginning his life was shaped by hard work and quiet determination, values passed down from his parents and reinforced by the world around him.
In 1945 Sam moved to Newfield, New Jersey where his life took a meaningful turn. It was there that he met the love of his life Evelyn Cook. Through that union they were blessed with one daughter, Karen. She became a source of pride and purpose for Sam. It was there that he began working for Sheildalloy, where he dedicated 30 years of loyal service. Later in life, he continued his strong work ethic at Shoprite until his retirement. He would often say “Don’t say retirement, say you are taking a sabbatical”.
Sam later rejoined Truth Baptist Church under the guidance of Pastor James E. Whyte Jr., where his faith was renewed and strengthened. He held a deep love and respect for his pastor and his First lady Denise Whyte, cherishing their leadership, guidance, and sense of community they fostered within the church. His connection to the church was more than attendance, it was a source of spiritual grounding, fellowship, and joy.
Samuel is survived by his beloved daughter Karen Wilson (Charles); his cherished great-granddaughter Zaniya Hall-Kirk; and a host of other grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will continue to carry his legacy forward. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Evelyn Vinegar, and his grandchildren Ebony Vinegar and Kenneth Dupree Kirk, as well as his brother and sisters.
