Sherman "Buck" Benjamin Hampton was born November 16, 1939 in Bishop, West Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie "Limb" and Rosa Hampton, Mother Shirley Branch, and brother Harold Hampton. Sherman received Christ early in life and dedicated his life to the Lord throughout his adulthood. During his childhood he was a faithful member of Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Bishop, West Virginia. In 1989 he became a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Salem, New Jersey, where he served as Deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was also a member of the Haven Community Chorus, Mt. Zion Male Choir, and sang at numerous places when asked.
Sherman attended Excelsior High School in War West Virginia where he played football and baseball and graduated with honors. Sherman and his sister Yvonne were inseparable from childhood through adulthood. After High School Sherman joined the US Army where he served from 1957 to 1960 and was honorably discharged. He then attended City College of New York where he majored in Industrial Engineering.
In December of 1995 Sherman married the love of his life Mary "Trish" Watkins, and they became one. Into this union Sherman brought 5 children, Sherman Tyrone (Josette) Hampton of Douglasville, GA, Clifton (Swanda) Hampton of Stone Mountain, GA, Rose (Richard) Price of Pensacola, FL, Cheryl Hampton of Decatur, GA, Yolanda (Harry) Charles of Fayetteville, GA. Trish brought 2 children into this union, Darren (Kejonda) Watkins of Wilmington, DE and Genika Watkins of Pennsgrove, NJ.
Sherman worked at Tuck Tape in 1960, Joshua Myers in 1966, General Cable Corporation in 1974, and Pirelli Cable where he served as a General Manager at all jobs until his retirement. Sherman was an avid reader and very swift with numbers. He could do complex equations from the top of his head.
Anyone who knew Sherman could attest to his love for music and his singing. He wooed everyone with his musical talent. Sherman never met a stranger and enjoyed talking with people. He was not only a pillar and leader to his family, but to his community as well.
In 2004 Sherman was elected to serve on Salem New Jersey Council Board where he wore many hats. He was Chairman of the Board of Social Services and City of Salem Safety Commission. Sherman was very instrumental in meeting the needs of the citizens of Salem New Jersey. Sherman served as City Councilman for many years until he became ill.
