Shirley
Lindsey
August 16, 1943 – May 25, 2023
This is not going to be an ordinary obituary because Shirley Lindsey was no ordinary woman.
Shirley Williams was born August 16, 1943, in Columbia South Carolina to Vernell Gadson and Charley Williams. When our mother graduated from high school, she packed her bags and headed North to Philadelphia for a better life, she joined the United House of Prayer for All People and one night during service she dropped her button and a handsome man named Henry Lindsey picked it up and it was love at first sight. They were married on October 16, 1963. Henry and Shirley had two beautiful girls Shirlverna Zeldreama Lindsey (1967) and Zelrecka Shirljanea Lindsey (1972). Her girls were the love of her life (especially the youngest). Our mother worked at Newcomb Hospital for over 20 years as a Nurse's Aide on 2 South.
Growing up our mother was always a straight chaser she told you about yourself but would always make you feel loved afterwards. The words that would describe our mother would be loyal, if she liked you, she stood by you, but if she loved you, she would move heaven and earth for you. Friendly, our mother would talk to a rock if it talked back. Anywhere we went everyone knew her, her smile was contagious. Loving, you knew her love was genuine, she took care of a lot of people, her mother, St. Fields, St. Martha Scott, Ms. Kotock, Mom Bates and especially our father before he passed away December 23, 2008. Resilient, our mother experienced a lot but was always smiling. Our mother was the type of person that when something happened, she would go into beast mode, get what she needed to get done and then cry about it later. She was amazing and was the backbone of our family.
Our mother transitioned May 25, 2023, but her homegoing service was May 23, 2023. The people she loved were by her bedside telling stories about her and laughing we wanted her to leave this earth surrounded by joy. She leaves behind two amazing children (especially the younger one) very close friends, Mae Johnson, Elanor Greco, Diane Davis, Margie Snipes, Sis Samuels, Raul Bradley (cousin), Rhonda Fooks, Cora Bennett, Georgette Scott, Ms. Geneva Soil, and Lucy Coursey.
Our mother had two biological children but adopted many more. The adopted children she leaves behind are Adrienne Goldsboro, Lorraine McCloud, April Crowley, Renea Waiters, Omayra Hayward, Chiqui Diaz, Yolanda King, Bettina Hills (who stole my mom, but that topic is for another time), Akisha Scott, Katrina Govan and Kenya Bennett.
The adopted grandchildren she leaves behind are Geneva Powers, Mateo Hayward, Omayra Heredia, Octavious Crowley, Brianna Crowley and Jurnee Crowley.
The adopted great-grandchildren she leaves behind are Nazire Powers, Stephanie Powers, Antonio Powers, Sabria Powers, Amoria Powers and Amira Powers.
Three grand puppies: Tiger Williams (her favorite that made her love dogs), Roxy & Diesel Coursey.
Rest well mom you have earned your eternal sleep, the last words you said to us were "I Love You" and we will always love you and you will forever be in our hearts. Love your daughters Shirlverna & Zelrecka Lindsey.
