Susan Jeanette Flagg was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 19,1955 to the late Walter Flagg, Sr. and Alice Wentz Flagg. Susan was educated at Gompers Elementary School, Leeds Junior High School, and Germantown High School in Philadelphia. Susan studied piano for 10 years at Settlement Music School. In middle school, Susan played cello in All-City Orchestra. Susan attended Drexel University where she majored in fashion design and merchandising. During an internship, Susan worked at the internationally renowned women’s specialty boutique Nan Duskin on Rittenhouse Square. Susan loved her time at Nan Duskin as it resonated well with her strong fashion sense. She later worked for several seasons as a case worker for the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services in the LIHEAP Program (Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program).

After visiting St. Raymond’s with friends, Susan converted to Catholicism in the 1990s and joined St. Raymond’s of Pentafort Church. Susan’s experience at St. Raymond’s and the excellent care that her father, Walter Flagg, received at St. Joseph’s Villa in his final years led Susan’s mother Alice to convert to Catholicism. Alice became a devoted member of St. Raymond’s and an active member of Bible study and RCIA ministries.

Throughout her life, Susan was kind and loving towards others. She was a champion of the underdog. Her personality and interests and beliefs were strong and clear. Among other things, she believed in peace. Above all, she believed we should love one another to make the world a better place. Susan helped to care for her mother Alice in her latter years. Over the years, Susan and Alice made many trips to what Susan referred to as their “second home” in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Nearly everyone in Provincetown knew Alice and Susan.

Susan was predeceased by her parents Walter and Alice and by her brothers Walter Jr. and Michael Sr. She leaves to cherish her memory her sister, Dr. Stephanie Flagg, brother-in-law Norris Benns, Jr., Esq, sister-in-law Robin Benns, sister-n-law Jennifer Benns-Bundy, brother-in-law Dennis Bundy and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She also leaves to cherish her memory godchildren John H Jefferson III, Brandi Jefferson, and Gregory Simon Denny, Jr. She will be remembered by her closest friend Joan Jefferson and Joan’s grandson Brandon Jefferson. Joan and Brandon were tireless in their efforts to care for Susan during the last several years of her life.
