Wilmer Nell
King
August 18, 1943 – August 18, 2021
August 18, 1943, Willie and Inell (Harrison) Seabrooks welcomed the sixth of their seven children into this world. Guiding her to a firm foundation in the Lord, her parents raised her in a home centered around ministry, family, and love. On August 18, 2021, the Lord welcomed His child into her Heavenly home.
THE VIRTUOUS WOMAN AT WORK, GROWING HER FAMILY
May 1, 1976 Wilmer Nell and John King united in holy matrimony. To this loving couple two beautiful baby girls were born. When God blesses, He does so abundantly. Nicole was this blessing. She decided she needed company and asked for a little sister. Then came Sheri. Be careful what you ask for!
UBT LIFE
Wilmer Nell was a lifelong member of Union Baptist Temple, joining under the leadership of Reverend Robert Davis. While at Union, she participated in many ministries. She was a past co-coordinator of Vacation Bible School, past Sunday School teacher, and sang on the Tones of Agape choir with her beautiful soprano voice. Wilmer Nell was most proud of forming and coordinating, Union Baptist Temple's Girl Scout Troops in 1978: Brownie Troop #77, Jr. Troop #229, and Cadette Troop #105. During cookie time, her home was filled from ceiling to floor with boxes of cookies. She held the position of treasurer with the Senior Ushers until her passing. She was also a dedicated and loyal Senior Missionary and an active member of the Women's Bible Study.
TIME FOR LEARNING
It all began at Fairfield Township public Schools, where her leadership capabilities emerged. As a Safety Patrol member, Wilmer Nell was an activist for the underdog. She defended her younger sister, Thelma, by having an altercation while still wearing her Safety Patrol belt. Much to everyone's surprise, the school permitted her to keep her belt and remain a Safety Patrol. Bridgeton High School allowed her competitive nature to shine. Wilmer Nell loved playing High School Field Hockey. This was the beginning of her love for sports. Wilmer Nell was even given the honor to sing the Lord's Prayer at her High School graduation in 1963. After being informed by her mother, that if she didn't want to work in a bean field for the rest of her life, she had to get an education, off to school she went. Lincoln Preparatory School in Philadelphia, PA was instrumental in her success on the next journey of her education. Bethune-Cookman College, Daytona Beach, Florida afforded her the opportunity to receive her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education in 1969. As a Dorm Room Adviser, Wilmer Nell used her down time studying, bowling on the intramural team, making life-long friendships, and lending an attentive ear when needed.
BUILDING A RESUME
From the bean field to the classroom, whatever she did, she gave it her all. Wilmer Nell thanked God for her position as an elementary classroom teacher. From the time she received her degree to the day of her retirement, Wilmer Nell's career spanned thirty-three dedicated years. Her classes were the envy of the school, as they traveled from Washington, D.C. to New York city. Even after retirement, her heart remained with the students, so she taught homeschool instruction for many years. God's hands were all over her life as she reached out to young scholars who needed a loving, caring, teacher, and surrogate mother. To God be the glory, her legacy will live on forever.
HEART AND HOME
Card playing, traveling, a good meal, tennis, and football. What do all of these have in common? Wilmer Nell. She was an avid card player. If you couldn't talk smack or take it, then don't sit at the table! One of her greatest pleasures was showing her daughters the United States and beyond. They traveled extensively. UUM, UUM, did you ever taste her fired chicken or apple pie? If you needed a good meal, you came to the white house on Commerce St. Along with a good meal, Wilmer Nell was well known for giving advice, solicited and unsolicited. Tennis anyone? Wilmer Nell loved playing tennis in her formative years. If you had nothing good to say about the Eagles football team, then don't say anything at all!
SO INVOLVED
Wilmer Nell lent her voice to the John Howard Caravan, Trinity AME Church choir, and anywhere else her melodic voice was needed. She was an active member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Rho Rho Zeta Chapter of Bridgeton, NJ. Wilmer nell was a dedicated member of the Ionic Chapter #15, Order of the Eastern Star, prince Hall Affiliation, of which she was a past Worthy Matron. Her professional affiliations included the Bridgeton Education Association, New Jersey Education Association, Cumberland County Education Association, and the New Jersey Retired Education Association.
